​Teacher of Excellence Award

About the MCELA Teacher of Excellence Award

Purpose: The Maine Council for English Language Arts, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English, wishes to recognize and celebrate ELA teachers who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and inspired a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning in their students.

Eligibility: Nominees should be full time English language arts teachers who have taught for at least three years in public, independent, or private schools in Maine. Nominees do not have to be a member of the Maine Council for English Language Arts. Teachers may be nominated by a supervisor or a teaching peer.

Award Criteria: Educators nominated for this award should:
  • Provide leadership in the profession at the school or district
  • Develop and present effective ELA practices to colleagues within the school community
  • Demonstrate ongoing commitment to student-centered learning of all backgrounds and abilities
  • Be involved in the community and school beyond the classroom 
  • Foster a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning in their students

Award Details: The awardee will receive:
  • Free registration to the MCELA annual conference
  • MCELA membership for one year
  • Invitation to present a workshop session at the MCELA annual conference 
  • A recognition award
  • Nomination for NCTE’s Teacher Award

Nomination Deadline Extended to December 6, 2024

Award Selection: Nominated teachers will be contacted in December and will be asked to submit additional information via a Google form link sent to them. Additional information from nominees must be submitted in January to be considered for the award.

Award Announcement: The award winner will be announced at our in-person conference in March.
